Curiosity is a great force for learning. I find curiosity about what is happening, together with the realization that the same things happen over and over again, drives me to examine similar situations that happened in the past, and that’s very productive. Focusing on trying to understand the cause-effect relationships of these similar situations broadens my worldview and creates the faster and better feedback that I need. I’m doing that now in examining the rises and declines of empires and their reserve currencies because it’s very relevant to what’s happening with the U.S. and China (along with their currencies, their markets, their economies, their relationships and the world’s future) now and over the next several years. Those arcs of countries and reserve currencies rising to declining take about 250 years and could never be understood from the perspective of being in it. However, going above the individual cases, looking down on them, and seeing their patterns is critical to understanding what’s happening with the U.S. and China and the world now and over the next several years.
