My Opinion colleague Tim Culpan wrote that the change makes sense given that SoftBank hasn’t “operated” anything for a long time; it functions more as a stock picker, investing in startups and publicly traded companies.

It’s unusual for options-buying tied to individual stocks to be so explosive that it could move markets in this way, but that’s now the prevailing theory. Equity derivatives have become a favorite trading toy for presumably bored retail investors — those who don’t manage money professionally — who have taken a liking to platforms such as Robinhood while being shut in during the Covid-19 crisis. It’s hard to know Son’s specific motivations for joining that camp, but it’s certainly not boredom.

Investors have gone back and forth on whether Son, 63, is a true visionary or more of a gambler. He once spoke of a 300-year plan for SoftBank, but it soon became evident that he needed to concentrate on the present. Fraught investments in U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Corp. and office-rental company WeWork Cos. bruised his reputation. And after writing down the values of investments in WeWork and Uber Technologies Inc., SoftBank suffered a loss for the Japanese record books. Son was finally able to sell Sprint to T-Mobile US Inc. this year, ironically leaving the Japanese businessman as the biggest beneficiary of a deal pitched to regulators on American patriotism. As SoftBank laid plans to dump more than $40 billion of assets to shore up its balance sheet, Son was apparently left with funds to spend.

On Friday, the Financial Times unmasked SoftBank, the Japanese investment group, as the “Nasdaq whale” whose options trading helped stoke an eye-popping rally in tech stocks before a vicious market correction this week. Now, with the air suddenly coming out of inflated valuations, investors are urgently trying to understand how activity in derivatives markets sent Apple, Tesla and a host of hot stocks to record highs — and what might happen next.




How has options market activity diverged from usual patterns?

Investors with equity portfolios most often like to own puts as insurance to guard against a big drop in the broader market. But in the past few months, this has been flipped on its head for mega-cap tech stocks and there has been rampant buying of call options — particularly on Apple and Tesla.

It has looked to some veterans like a speculative mania. Investors betting that tech stocks will increase further in value have far outweighed those buying options that protect their holdings from lower share prices. The put to call ratio in Apple stock on Monday was the lowest in at least 10 years, according to Bloomberg data; the ratio for Tesla last month set a four-year low.


Who has been driving the option activity?

A combination of retail investors and large funds have jumped on the tech call option bandwagon. A major institutional buyer, nicknamed the “Nasdaq whale” by traders and identified now as Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank, has dominated the buying of calls, attracting plenty of other players along for the ride. Funds already sitting on big gains have been happy to recycle a little of their profit to further leverage their portfolios and aggressively buy calls. Retail investors, trading on online platforms such as Robinhood — free of commissions — have also embraced options trading in record numbers and chased big tech names.

Към момента резултатите от тестването на корона ваксината на "Бионтех" са по - добри от тези на "Модерна", където има доста странични ефекти. "Бионтех" е с "Пфайзер", ще имат достатъчно капацитет за производство, също се очаква да са първите, които да почнат масови ваксинации, края на октомври или началото на ноември. Ясна обаче стана цената на една доза, излязоха поръчките, това се калкулира в цените на акциите. Мисля ще има скок, поне още един през октомври при излизане на положителните резултати от тестовете.

Това е точно така, но дали Модерна няма да направи по-големия шип заради мотото AMERICA FIRST за да подсили националистическите нагласи сред янките. Въпреки по голямата привлекателност на Бионтеха, като че ли лобистите на Модерна са с една идея по-добре сложени при Статуята на свободата.
