Earlier today, a bug was found in bitcoin 0.7 (and earlier versions) related to the size of blocks and number of transactions in them. With 0.8, many pools started increasing the size of their blocks above the soft limit (250kb). The hard limit of 1 MB was still in place.

The bug in 0.7 was triggered when a block of 990kb with a large number of inputs/outputs caused 0.7's database system to not validate the block. This created a "hard fork", where briefly the network was split between two different blockchains.

BTC Guild quickly reverted its servers back to 0.7 after a concensus in #bitcoin-dev was reached that the proper thing to do was enforce the 0.7 chain, even though the majority of mining was being done on 0.8. Thanks to BTC Guild, slush, ozcoin, Eligius, and other pools, this hard fork only lasted about 6 hours.

Payouts were frozen during this period, but have since been re-enabled. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but this precaution was required while all of the servers were being modified to react to the problem.

За този проблем с размера на блока се говореше от около 10 дена, някьде бях мярнал тема, така че не е било чак изненада. От цялата работа засега лайткойна получи допьлнителен импулс и направи почти половин долар за монетка. Обемите на тьрговия биткойн-лайткойн са се увеличили а и обемите ФИАТ-лайткойн. Сложността на лайткойн мрежата скочи от 400 на 2000 за седмица ?? . Общо взето, китайците купуват лайткойн като луди от два дена, което затвьрждава идеята, че трябва да се притежават криптовалути.
Не е 'откритие', че навсякьде по света имат койни хората вече. Има лека паника сред хората, които сега разбират, че е имало проблем, а и гледайки падащата цена, може да се хммм.. получат хубави нива за покупка(Лично мнение).

Съвети за обикновените потребители:

(1) If you are a "regular user" (not a miner), the best thing is to do nothing and wait a couple hours.
(2) If you are a "regular user", Upgrading, downgrading, whining, FUD, etc, will make no difference. Only miners have an incentive to do anything.
(3) Regardless of who you are, your transactions are not dead, your coins are not lost. They will just temporarily be held up. If you sent a transaction within the last few hours, it may take a few more hours before it's sorted out.
(4) If you insist on processing transactions right now it's probably best to wait 30+ confirmations. It's just due diligence though ... an attacker would still need a tremendous amount of mining power, quick thinking, and a victim willing to part with a lot of BTC.
(5) By tomorrow this will be in the past and everything will appear to be normal again. If you slept through this, you'd never know that anything happend (except for the price drop).

Bitcoin blockchain issue - bitcoin deposits temporarily suspended

UPDATE 5:25pm JST. We are now resuming Bitcoin Deposits.

Early this morning, a bitcoin block too big for version 0.7 was mined by miners using version 0.8, creating a fork in the blockchain. After some deliberation in the community, it was decided that miners should downgrade their version and continue the 0.7 fork until the issue is resolved.

Also in order to avoid any possible problems we decided to temporally suspend all Bitcoin deposits on Mt.Gox until one of the blockchain wins.

Please note however, that Bitcoin deposits with Mt.Gox or those in transit are safe and that once the situation is back to normal, we will resume Bitcoin deposits and that all deposits done in the meantime will be confirmed too.

Finally we believe that this matter will be resolved within the end of the day for us in Japan.

Current assets under management in the Bitcoin Fund are $3.2 million (2.5€ million) and there is no performance-based fee. However, the fund charges an annual management fee o.5% of Net Share Value payable monthly in order to provide the sophisticated security and wallet management that one would expect with such large amounts at stake.

The threat modelling approach addresses data loss risk, hardware failure risk, jurisdictional risk, external hacker risk, dishonest employee risk, and employee death or disability risk.

The private key itself is AES-256 encrypted. After exporting Bitcoin private keys from wallet.dat file, data is stored in a TrueCrypt container on three separate flash drives. Using Shamir’s Secret Sharing algorithm, the container password is then split into three parts utilizing a 2-of-3 secret sharing model. Incorporating physical security with electronic security, each flash drive from various manufacturers is duplicated several times and, together with a CD-ROM, those items are vaulted in a bank safety deposit box in three different legal jurisdictions. To leverage geographic distribution as well, each bank stores only part of a key, so if a single deposit box is compromised, no funds are lost.
