Commerzbank’s chief executive has warned that bank may struggle to meet its profit target this year, after Germany’s second largest lender was caught up in the market turmoil that has roiled the global banking sector.


Stock and debt markets around the world swung wildly in January and February as concerns over a slowing Chinese economy, a plunging oil price and renewed questions about the stability of the European banking system unsettled investors, writes James Shotter.

At the bank’s annual shareholder meeting, Martin Blessing, who steps down at the end of the month, said that as a result of the market turbulence and the continuing pressure from low interest rates, “the first quarter, which is usually a strong one for banks, is… likely to be considerably weaker”, and lower than that of the last quarter.

As a result of this slow start to the year, matching the €1.06bn net profit that Commerzbank made in 2015 would become “a considerably more ambitious [undertaking]”. In February the bank had said that it expected a “slight increase” in net profit this year.
