Emerging market earnings are running a bit above historic averages right now, so their CAPE is around 13. For comparison, the CAPE for the S&P 500 stands at about 25.
That's a remarkable reversal from 2007, when the emerging markets had a CAPE of 37, versus an S&P CAPE of 26. "For every $100 you invest, you're getting $8 in earnings and $3 in dividends," says Arnott. "Compare that to the S&P, where you get $4 in earnings, and less than $2 in dividends! When you start with a CAPE of around 25, returns over the next 5 years tend to be 0.5% a year."
On the other hand, says Arnott, buying at a CAPE of 15 or below produces average annual returns of 16% over the ensuing half-decade.

Wondering where next to focus attention after the emerging market carnage? Citi has a bank chart for you:
The European / Global banks most exposed to the more fragile EM markets are the Large Cap Spanish Banks, especially Santander (Brazil and Argentina exposure is equivalent to 270% of group TCE). Santander reported their 4Q13 results on Wednesday that included a weak Brazilian performance: attributable profit -31% yoy, -14% qoq (in local currency). While BBVA has exposure to weaker EM countries, its largest single EM country exposure is Mexico where it just reported a very encouraging 4Q13 (net profit: +16% yoy, +26% qoq).
Ronit Ghose & co also note that HSBC stock has swooned this year too. Interesting because while it advertises itself as the worlds local bank, it is for the most part a developed market institution with little exposure to the fragile 5: its Brazil exposure is similar to BNP’s Turkish assets, as a proportion of total common equity.
The Citi strategists have chimed in as well, adhering to the well worn tactic that if you are going to say something after the fact, then it better be interesting.
So, noting that stock markets in countries with current account deficits have fared far worse that those with surpluses this year, they have had a look back in time. It turns out that weighting surplus vs deficit countries would have been a good trade over time (well, since 1995 at least) performing better than a strategy which used valuation or relative economic growth.
Mindful that the last crisis in the eurozone was also in large part one of current accounts, they have produced the following matrix of emerging markets. If you are a country you want to be in the bottom right of this chart, rubbing shoulders with Russia and South Korea:
And while on the topic, some helpful developed market paranoia:
Nobody seems to care about DM current accounts right now, but you never know – that could change. The chart below plots the same variables. Right now, this would favour Norway, Singapore and Japan. Even Spain and Italy are now creeping into view. It would avoid the anglo-saxon markets.

VALE - Monthly suppoort 8-10
CLE - Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. - Monthly support 8,30 - 11
SNE - Sony
AMD - Monthly support 1.90 - 2.20
HMY Harmony Gold Mining Co., Ltd.
Cash to Debt 0.82
Market Cap 1.25 B P/E(ttm)
Enterprise Value 1.3 B P/B 0.39
CPAC - Cementos Pacasmayo SAA
Market Cap 1.12 B
Enterprise Value 1.03 B
Cash to Debt 1.30
