Aqua Metals' core innovation in AquaRefining is to replace the smelting step of lead production with aqueous electrolysis. This means filling a tank with water and an electrolyte (a secret catalyst formulated by Aqua Metals), adding the ground-up & treated used batteries, then running an electric current through it. Pure lead ions are attracted to the cathode, and Aqua Metals developed a process to extract this lead continuously. Any impurities in the input do not collect at the cathode, they fall to the bottom of the tank and can be removed safely. These other compounds including antimony, copper, and zinc can be sold to merchant metal buyers.
The key advantages of AquaRefining versus smelting include:
-Lower cost: AquaRefining costs less to operate, using far less energy, and can be powered with renewable fuels.
-Less polluting: No dust, slag, lost lead, or polluted wastewater. 3 U.S. smelters have been closed due to pollution/non-compliance.
-Easier to permit: Aqua Metals expects to get ISO 14000 certification. It's very hard for smelters to achieve this.
-Scales easily: Smelting requires operation of a big plant, difficult to turn off and on; AquaRefining units can easily be shut down.
