During down years like 2002, the S&P 500 is likely to rise, if history repeats itself.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The U.S. stock market, which hasn"t had a winning year since 1999, may narrow its 2002 losses during the final trading days of the year if historical market patterns persist.

An analysis by Briefing.com showed that over the last 21 years, the Standard & Poor"s 500 index has posted a 0.5 percent return, on average, between Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.

During those years, the market has gone higher 67 percent of the time during the Christmas to New Year"s week, according to Briefing, and last fell during the period in 1996.


The data hold some notable patterns. In years where the market has been down year-to-date, for example, the market has never been down between Christmas and New Year"s.

"It is a small piece of encouraging news for the week ahead," said Robert Green, the Briefing.com analyst who wrote the report.

And every down Christmas week in the past 21 years (there have been seven of them) has occurred during a year when the market rose.

The U.S stock market closes at 1 p.m., ET, Tuesday ahead of the full Christmas Day close. That"s followed by four trading sessions before the Jan 1 holiday.

The Standard & Poor"s 500 index is down 22 percent year-to-date through Monday, meaning the stock market will probably close lower for a third straight year for the first time since 1941.

This Script outlines the charting method described by Nicolas Darvas in his classic book, "How I Made 2,000,000 in the Stock Market."

Darvas forms "boxes" based on his studies of price actions.
I suggest that you read the entertaining and educational book, but here is the gist of the system:

1) If PriceHigh stops making new highs for 3 days, make the PriceHigh 3 days ago the BoxTop and go to Step 2.

2) If PriceHigh breaks BoxTop, go back to Step 1. Otherwise, If PriceLow stops making new lows for 3 days then Make the PriceLow the BoxBottom and go to Step 3.

3) Now that the BoxTop and BoxBottom are formed, we have a Darvas Box. The Darvas Box is broken when today"s PriceHigh or PriceLow breaks BoxTop or BoxBottom.

I didn"t form any trading plans for this charting technique. You could try buying or selling when the Darvas Box is broken.

Za pazara: tvarde malko sa uchastnicite, za da se pravqt izvodi. I vse pak: vchera VIX spadna dosta, a v sashtoto vreme SPX ne pokaza dvijenie nagore. Tova qsno pokazva samodovolstvoto i samouverenostta na investitorite, a pak tova hich ne e dobre za pazara. Short-term - mojem da vidim nqkakvo pokachvane, dokato VIX se izcherpa do nivo ot okolo 20, no sled tova v srednosrochen plan - az mislq, che sme tvardo nadolu.
