The International Monetary Fund Wednesday approved a EUR500 million loan tranche for Romania.
The IMF said Romanian authorities will continue to treat the facility as a precautionary credit line and so don't intend to tap it.
The EUR2 billion loan program was approved in March last year, but there have been questions about how Romania's new government would treat the facility.
Nemat Shafik, one of the fund's deputy managing directors, said the country continues to make good progress under the loan program, with strong implementation of the economic policies agreed as terms for the credit line. "All program targets were met," she said.
"However, the economic outlook for this year is being weighed down by the declining growth prospects in the euro area," Shafik said, adding, "continued commitment to the economic reform agenda is crucial to help withstand current uncertainties and increase potential growth."
The IMF said Romania's government remains committed to a 2012 budget-deficit goal below 3% of gross domestic product.
"Strict spending discipline is needed to achieve the target," including faster structural reforms to government energy and transport companies that "will be essential to reduce arrears, improve economic efficiency and boost growth."
