Intel recently beat their earnings estimate by the magic 1 penny, only with the help of "pro-forma" accounting, of course. However, their net earnings had plunged 77% in the 4th quarter. Earnings per share are about where they were FOUR YEARS AGO. Even though the stock trades more than two times higher than in 1997, it received a "strong buy" from Merrill Lynch today. The P/E ratio is approximately 160.

An even better example is a Canadian aluminum company called Alcan. Alcan reported a $357 million LOSS for the 4th quarter, which is a staggering loss of $1.12 per share. You may be wondering how badly the stock fell?
Why, it actually RALLIED OVER $4.00 per share in just 5 days and is still rising! This stock was actually trading $1.00/share lower...WHEN IT HAD $357 MILLION MORE PROFITS. Somehow the fear of earnings not justifying prices has vanished, even if the earnings are NEGATIVE. This P/E ratio, even using "pro-forma" accounting, is approximately 190. And the beat goes on.

One of the biggest losers of the day on extremely high volume, 153 million shares, was Worldcom. Rumors were flying that they had substantial exposure to the now bankrupt Global Crossing, and that they would announce internal accounting problems. If that was not enough S&P was rumored to be removing them from the S&P-500, Moody"s was going to downgrade their debt, Goldman Sachs had downgraded them to a sell and Bernie Ebers was going to get another margin call if the stock fell below $10. All of these rumors were flatly denied by everyone concerned with the exception of the margin call. Nobody was available to comment on that one and it has happened in the recent past. The board bailed him out on that one but rumor is that he will be on his own this time. Over $5.5 billion in market cap evaporated from WCOM on the flurry of rumors.

Defenses range from opinion that a debt rating downgrade is unlikely, to view that there is nothing new in the market today which should contribute to the selling. Among the rumors said to be impacting WCOM today are: 1) co will be booted from the S&P 500, 2) debt rating will be cut to junk, 3) subsidiary UUNET is losing AOL as a customer, 4) WCOM will miss its qtr... Also mentioned as possible catalysts for the heavy selling is poor technical position of the stk (see 10:51 comment) and general concerns about accounting at companies with aggressive acquisition strategies (TYC -15%, CD -13%).
