While guided about the old cemetery in the town of Bath we were shown a gravestone with an inscription:
God Almighty In His infinite wisdom favoured England with
Col Erwin Sullivan,esq.
who had a knack of taming wild nations
and fought valiantly in Sudan and India.
He fell for King and Country in the conflict with the Mamelukes
on Aug 3rd 1831
Our guide went on with the story:
"His body was put in a barrel of rum, shipped to his native town here and ceremonially buried in this grave.
Do not ask me what happened to the rum..."
