Vassil Dobrev is an archaeologist-Egyptologist with the French Archaeological Institute (IFAO) in Cairo, founded in 1880. He earned a Ph.D in Ancient History (Egyptology) in 1992 from the University of Paris, Sorbonne. Born July 30, 1961 in Bulgaria, Dobrev is of French nationality and currently resides in Cairo. He speaks, reads and writes five modern languages: Bulgarian (his mother tongue), French, English, Italian, and Russian. He also reads German and speaks Arabic. In addition, he understands a number of Hieroglyphic and cursive writings of Ancient Egypt: Egyptian of the Old Kingdom, Hieratique, Classical Egyptian, and Neo-Egyptian. He served as scientific and field director of the IFAO's excavation mission at Tabbet al-Guesh (South Saqqara) and was responsible for the IFAO South Saqqara mapping project
