Boston, July 29:
Speaking on the world economy in Utah, Dallas Fed president Richard W. Fisher
(voter) discussed the dominance of the American economy and how the US is a huge
importer. Along those lines he discussed trade barriers, China, and the
importance of the US keeping its "house" (i.e. budget) in order. The full text
of his address is available on the Dallas Fed website at the following URL: http://www.dallasfed.org/news/speech.../fs050729.html
Fisher expressed concern on the budget deficit, as well as housing. In
particular he saw some areas with "unsettling" home price gains.
With regards to China, Fisher said that Chinese economic growth wouldn"t
overwhelm the US but that the globalization of the world economy complicated
monetary policy a bit. He said, "More than ever, we must look beyond our
borders to understand movements in inflation, interest rates and wages. There is
evidence, for example, that long-term Treasury yields are sensitive to
manufacturing trends in the large industrialized nations overseas. This raises
questions about how we ought to measure the effectiveness of monetary policy.
Which is the more reliable gauge in a world of integrated capital markets-the
inflation-adjusted federal funds rate or the slope of the yield curve?
Currently, they are sending very different signals." Fed officials, including
Fed Chairman Greenspan have downplayed the yield curve as a signal of slower
economic growth.
