WASHINGTON (AFX) - The Federal Reserve will likely to cut short-term
interest rates by half a percentage point given no sign that the
economy is picking up, according to a report in the Washington Post.
Fed officials want to cut rates from 1.25 percent to 0.75 percent as a
"sort of exclamation point" to stress that this would be the final step
-which together with the recent tax cut - would put the economy on a
strong growth path, the paper said. Analysts have been debating in
recent days whether the FOMC would cut rates by a half-percentage point
or by a smaller quarter-point.
