NEW YORK, Feb. 3 (MktNews) - The dollar struggled to recover
against the major pairs Tuesday morning, with the greenback still
reeling from the sharp declines seen overnight that sent the euro-dollar
up over 175 points to test highs near $1.2600.
The discovery of ricin in a U.S. Senate building late Monday, in
mail bound for the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, prompted
renewed terror fears in the currency market and led to a dollar sell-off
during the Asian session, traders said.
The dollar weakness soon triggered a wave of stop-losses through
$1.2500 in the euro, early in the European session, and then later over
$1.2550, they added.
The decline was "not just terror," one U.K. corporate strategist
said. "There is a fair amount of profit-taking going on too, but
generally it"s fairly whippy action ahead of the weekend"s G7, and no
one wants a position.
"I think it is going to be like this for the rest of the week, I am
afraid," he observed.
Additional topside euro resistance was seen at $1.2600 and
$1.2640/65, the strategist said.
"A break of $1.2665 leaves the door open to a run on $1.2775/80"
the Jan 23 highs, he said.
Overnight comments from Japanese Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki
also added another element of negativity to the greenback.
Tanigaki said while the G7 will not neglect FX issues, their talks
will center on macroeconomics.
Market players, hoping for some definitive statement from the G7 on
the dollar"s fast-paced declines or at least about excessive volatility
in the FX market, were disappointed by the remarks, traders said.
The euro was trading at $1.2562 at 9:17 a.m. EST, off from the
day"s highs at $1.2599 seen during the European session and up from the
day"s lows at $1.2420, seen in Asian action.
Sterling soared also, testing highs at $1.8424, before settling
back at present levels near $1.8375.
Cable saw lows overnight near $1.8195, before rising on new carry
trade demand driven by a combination of the ricin concerns and improved
CBI data.
Dollar-yen was trading at Y105.53, after holding in a Y105.25 to
Y105.83 range.
Covert Bank of Japan (BOJ) demand was seen at the day"s lows, and
is expected on any subsequent declines towards what is perceived as the
new "line in the sand" at Y105.00, traders said.
Large scale stop-loss dollar-yen sell orders are expected on a
decisive break below that level, with an eye towards the next major
level of support at Y101.20/30, the lows seen in December 1999 and
January 2000.
In U.S. markets, all eyes will be on U.S. Treasury Secretary John
Snow who is due to testify on the budget before the House and Ways
Committee at 2:00 p.m. EST. An earlier hearing to Senate Finance was
cancelled due to the ricin scare at the Capitol.
While his prepared statement will focus on the FY2005 budget, any
comments by Snow in the Q&A session relating to the U.S. dollar could
have an impact on currency markets ahead of the G7 meeting, traders
said.
