EUR/USD Price Action Controlled By 1.3250 Strike] New York,
December 17: It"s been a rather quiet day for EUR/USD trading and the options
market may bear some direct responsibility. A large 1.3250 strike rolled off
today and a US investment bank was an aggressive hedger keeping spot prices
within 25 points or so on either side of 1.3250 for much of the early US
session. The expected weekend selloff in vols is largely missing as well, so
business as usual is anything but. There are two possible explanations for this
situation. The first is a lack of interest as the market heads for a weekend
near the end of the year. The other is the market has already sold short date
vols expecting limited trading ranges through the end of the year. The latter
may be a recipe for disaster, since Dec moves in the FX markets are sometimes
legendary and with plenty of new players selling FX vols this year; it seems the
low volatility environment of 2004 isn"t likely to persist in 2005.
1-month EUR/USD vols fell 0.1% to 9.15% and the Risk Reversal fell 0.05% to
-0.1% favoring EUR puts. The inability of the RR to make any meaningful rally is
either a function of hedging demand for EUR puts as traders holds underlying
cash positions, or a sign that the current spot rally is mature and unlikely to
continue. Besides the 1.3250 strikes that expired today, more were noted at
1.3300 and 1.3350. 1-month USD/CHF vols fell 0.1% to 10.35% and the RR fell
0.05% to flat (no bias). 1-month GBP/USD vols rose 0.15% to 9.15% and the RR
rose 0.05% to flat (no bias). --Thomas.Rogers@thomson.com/rs
